[UPDATE] 4 New ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ fighters revealed, including controversial Poison
Last year’s Comic-Con was Capcom’s first showcase of Street Fighter X Tekken, possibly the most significant cross-over game in a long time (I refuse to give that title to MvC3). Since then a floodgate of information has been released, and Capcom is back in San Diego once again for Comic-Con 2011. While I’m sure they are busy dodging fan hatred stemming from cancelling Mega Man Legends 3, they were able to release a new trailer for Street Fighter X Tekken, including four new characters to add to the roster.
The first character from Capcom’s side is Dhalsim. Because he has been in the roster for so long, it is not exactly a surprise that he is making his appearance in this game as well. However, his style is extremely defensive, and is very limited as far as combo-potential, so it is a bit of an odd fit into a game that is so offense and juggle heavy. There’s no question that good Dhalsim players will be able to completely shift the pace of a game at any point, so it will add some variety to what you’ll typically see out of this game.
Next is a character that has never even appeared as a playable character in the Street Fighter series, Poison. Poison has been an extremely controversial character ever since her inclusion in Capcom’s Final Fight series. There was apparently some controversy way back when about having a female character in a fighting game. Because of this, she was officially considered a transsexual character in North America. Because she hasn’t appeared in a game as a usable character in so long, I honestly don’t know what she is at this point, but I assume we’ll find out one way or another. Regardless, she is certainly one of the more overly-sexual characters I’ve seen in quite a while, so I guess that could be a good thing?
The third character revealed, and the first from the Tekken side, is Steve Fox. Steve is a brutal boxer, and appears to have a moveset comparable to Dudley from the Street Fighter side. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Capcom threw in Dudley or Balrog as a boxing counterpart, although maybe they will restrain from doing that because the fighting styles would be too similar.
Finally there is Yoshimitsu. I know Yoshimitsu as one of the weirdest characters I’ve seen in a fighting game. He appears completely different in most of the games he is in, which includes every game in the Tekken series as well as the Soul Calibur series. In the trailer he fights with his sword, so he may be the only character in the game who uses a real weapon to fight, which is not seen very often in the Street Fighter series (unless you count Poison’s whip thing). It seems like his insane moves from Tekken will carry over directly as well, including the bizarre move where he stabs himself in order to drain damage. The masked fighter will definitely be fun to play with.
The new characters brings the total roster count to 18, which is roughly half of what we can expect out of the full roster. Stay posted with VGW for more news and releases surrounding the game in the coming months!
UPDATE: It appears that wasn’t all that they were ready to reveal today. A new trailer was released showing off Poison’s ring partner from Street Fighter III, Hugo, as well as her old Final Fight cohorts, Guy and Cody. Does this mean we’ll see Haggar in the near future? Check out the new trailer below.
