The staff at VGW is always playing something, and in our new Essential Mobile Gaming feature, we shine the spotlight on the games getting rotation in our mobile devices. This week is full of variety, from Granny Smith and her apple-collecting platforming escapades, to cheesy “choose your own adventures” and compelling time management sims.
Granny Smith
I’ve always argued that the best mobile games are ones with simple gameplay mechanics that are deep enough to be addictive and challenging. Granny Smith oozes these qualities, and probably has no right to be priced at only $.99. The premise is straightforward: Gather up the apples before the bandit can. Your frail looking granny begins each level on skates, pushing herself up to speed with a cane. But then she proceeds to bash through windows and brick walls, with the cane acting as a zip line across all manner of wires. Whether she’s hurling baseballs to clear a path and impede the bandit, or timing jumps to land perfectly on her feet, Granny is a badass.
Beyond the wonderful and easy digestible gameplay, Mediocre Games has injected a ton of personality into Granny Smith. The worlds are whimsical, particle effects on Tegra 3 devices are satisfying to watch, and the characters exude hilarious facial animations in various situations. This is a happily spent 99 cents. ~Written by Jason Evangelho
