Essential Mobile Gaming: Prehistoric Vampire Grannies

The staff at VGW is always playing something, and in our new Essential Mobile Gaming feature, we shine the spotlight on the games getting rotation in our mobile devices. This week is full of variety, from Granny Smith and her apple-collecting platforming escapades, to cheesy “choose your own adventures” and compelling time management sims.

I’ve always argued that the best mobile games are ones with simple gameplay mechanics that are deep enough to be addictive and challenging. Granny Smith oozes these qualities, and probably has no right to be priced at only $.99. The premise is straightforward: Gather up the apples before the bandit can. Your frail looking granny begins each level on skates, pushing herself up to speed with a cane. But then she proceeds to bash through windows and brick walls, with the cane acting as a zip line across all manner of wires. Whether she’s hurling baseballs to clear a path and impede the bandit, or timing jumps to land perfectly on her feet, Granny is a badass.

Beyond the wonderful and easy digestible gameplay, Mediocre Games has injected a ton of personality into Granny Smith. The worlds are whimsical, particle effects on Tegra 3 devices are satisfying to watch, and the characters exude hilarious facial animations in various situations. This is a happily spent 99 cents. ~Written by Jason Evangelho

strange loves 300x146 Essential Mobile Gaming: Prehistoric Vampire GranniesStrange Loves 1: Vampire Boyfriends

Tin Man Games’ latest foray into the realm of digitized Choose Your Own Adventure novels strays significantly from their popular Gamebook formula to target a female audience with a penchant for romance. The title says it all: the first entry in the Strange Loves series focuses on two different vampires that the protagonist must choose between to achieve her own “happily ever after.”
With more endings than you can shake a stake at, achievements, and a handy bookmark feature that lets you save your progress at any time, Vampire Boyfriends is packed full of features that more than justify the asking price. Though the narrative is planted firmly in the “cheesy, Twilight-inspired teen fare” category, it pokes enough fun at its inspiration for fans of romance novels and dating simulation games alike to find plenty to enjoy. Just be aware that some scenes may be a little too risque for the younger crowd. ~Written by Anne Lee

the timebuilders cavemans prophecy 300x146 Essential Mobile Gaming: Prehistoric Vampire GranniesThe Timebuilders: Caveman’s Prophecy

I’m a sucker for time management games. BlooBuzz’s Caveman’s Prophecy is actually the second in their Timebuilder series for Android (Pyramid Rising was first). While not a truly hard game, it’s a fun time waster. You’re presented with goals by the mystical egg to get your people out of the cave and start civilization. There are 40 levels for you to tackle with levels ranging from about 4-7 minutes to complete. Technically there isn’t a time limit (nice for younger players), but if you complete the mission before the counter tickets down you’ll help build your village. This isn’t a game that will blow you away with graphics or varied game play, but I find it’s an easy, fun game to sit and play when you have a couple of minutes to burn. ~Written by Samantha Evangelho
