The latest issue of Game Informer is starting to arrive to subscribers today, and to say this was an anticipated one would be an understatement. We absolutely adored Mass Effect 2, as did most people who played it, so when we heard that this month’s issue of Game Informer would contain the first real details of Mass Effect 3, we were counting down the days.
So what can we learn from the latest issue of Game Informer? Well, if you played the Arrival DLC that just came out for Mass Effect 2, you know that Commander Shepard is in a little bit of legal trouble after the events of the DLC. In response, he is back on earth facing trial for his actions, when in the middle of the tribunal, the oft-referenced Reaper invasion takes place. Shepard escapes the attack, flees on the Normandy and sets out to gather a team yet again to fight the legendary threat.
Shepard will also face a new threat in Cerberus and the Illusive Man. The Illusive Man, who will be yet again voiced by Martin Sheen, is going to be more prominently featured in this title. BioWare is indicating that Cerberus is now out to kill Shepard, but no reason has been given yet.
So far, BioWare is confirming that, if they survived the first two games, Liara, Ashley, Kaiden, and Garrus will be squad-mates, plus a new character, James Sanders. Legion, Mordin, Wrex, and Anderson will also appear, given they survived Mass Effect 2.
BioWare is also stating that Mass Effect 3 will boast greater RPG elements than the game’s predecessors, allowing weapon customization, as well as deeper character upgrading. Also, no matter what class you are, you will be able to carry any weapon. Unfortunately, the new inventory slot system will limit how many weapons you can carry, unless you are of the Soldier class.
Just in case you’ve missed the boat on the Mass Effect franchise thus far, BioWare will be quick to bring you up to speed, as Mass Effect 3 will contain a catch-up comic feature, much in the way they did with PS3 users that didn’t play the first Mass Effect title.
BioWare has also stated that they will not release too much information regarding Mass Effect 3′s story. Jarrett Lee of BioWare posted on the BioWare forums, “[...] other than the attack on Earth, I think we’ll try harder this time not to spoil things for you. By the time the game ships you’ll be mad about the lack of story info.”
Lee was also very quick to tease, ” I’ve seen the stuff in store for you guys in Mass Effect 3. Be excited, be very excited.”
Mass Effect 3 is still expected to release in 2011 according to EA, and after reading this news, we cannot wait to get our hands on what is, in all likelihood, a strong contender for Game of the Year.
