As augmented reality continues to mature, startup Mobbles Corp. saw an area of opportunity: Create a free mobile game for both Android and iOS that uses your location to catch, raise, and care for wild and wacky digital creatures called Mobbles.
It’s a definite nod to the days of Tamagotchi, with a twist of Pokémon and some decidedly modern tweaks. For example, every Mobble is dynamic and one-of-a-kind; it will move positions several times throughout a day, and after a player catches it, no one else can.
“Our generation grew up with Pokémon and Tamagotchi,” says Alexandre Curtelin, co-founder of Mobbles Corp. “With Mobbles, we distilled the Pokémon experience to its basic components and added location-based and augmented reality gameplay—resulting in an experience more akin to magic than gaming. You’ll never forget the day you captured your first Mobble.”
Each Mobble also boasts their own “personal universes” with unique clothing, and they’ll let you know when they need your attention — keep them happy and they’ll produce crystals for you to buy new clothing, decorations, etc.
Players will also be able to trade Mobbles with friends (though we’re not yet sure if this will work cross-platform), and earn achievements for certain milestones in the upbringing of their virtual pets.
Without a doubt, Mobbles seems catered toward the younger crowd, but we’re still intrigued, so we’re taking the app with us to E3, and we’ll be hunting for the 50+ launch Mobbles around Los Angeles.
i/o Ventures aided in development of the game by helping Mobbles Corp. raise 1/2 a million dollars, so someone definitely saw the promise of this title. Mobbles is available now for iOS and Android for free.
