So it turns out that Modern Warfare 3 thing is, like, a big deal. Today, Activision announced that the game has earned more than $775 million in sales during its first five days on the market. Previously, Black Ops earned a whopping $650 million, and Modern Warfare 2 earned a mere $550 million. Which is way of saying whether you like it or not, the franchise is growing each year.
The sales records weren’t the only ones being smashed, as the game also reported the largest unique player login in one day on Xbox Live: 3.3 million players, which is nearly a million more than Black Ops. So far, Modern Warfare 3 players have logged 7 million hours of multiplayer on launch day. PSN also reported massive numbers of players, though Sony will not give a specific number at this time.
The CEO for Activision, Bobby Kotick, has labeled the series “one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world,” and reports the franchise has amassed more than $6 billion in retail sales. This is money I cannot even fathom.
Eric Hirshberg, Activision Publishing CEO, released the following statement: “But most of all, I want to thank our fans. They are our toughest critics, and our biggest supporters, and none of this would be possible without them.” Indeed, sir, indeed.
