Sony planning to spend $50 million on US Vita ad campaign
As of now, Sony’s new handheld, the PS Vita, doesn’t seem to be generating much buzz outside of the gaming population. Indeed, marketing for the device, which launches next week on February 22, has been slim. John Koller, Sony’s hardware marketing director, has said that will change soon, in a big way. We’re not talking about GameStop posters and a Taco Bell promotion, either. Sony America is prepped to spend $50 million on advertising once the device is closer to launch. Koller confirmed that this will be “the largest platform launch in terms of marketing investment we’ve ever had.”
With Vita’s lackluster sales in Japan, and the growing trend towards mobile gaming, Sony is taking a large chance on not only making a new handheld device, but in ensuring its success, as well. With a steep entry fee of $249.99, and expensive, proprietary memory cards, the odds could be stacked against PS Vita. However, Sony seems to understand which demographic they need to woo the most: commercials will target gamers in their 20s who already own a PS3 and play at least 8 hours a week. The commercials will highlight Vita’s features and try to assure gamers that despite being a handheld, the experience the Vita will offer will be on par with their PS3 experience.
Look for VGW’s reviews to start pouring in next week. In the meantime, enjoy this flash-from-the-past commercial for PSP:
